Mind = Blown

Presurfer had a link to some visual illusions involving our perception of color being based just as much on the surrounding colors than the color itself. This practical demonstration of that concept actually made me gasp a little because I'm easily amused. See the two shapes below? Even though the center cross section of one shape looks grayish-blue and the other looks yellow, each shape is actually the exact same hue. Roll over the image to mask it off and see for yourself:

Wheeeeeee!

How do we know that the color of the center cross section doesn’t just change when you “mask it off”? Hmmm….looks more like trickery to me. Perhaps my mind is too small to accept the scientific explanation.

I created the rollover. It doesn't change. No trickery involved. You can tell just by staring at the center part and noticing that it doesn't change. If you are unable to do that, though, I guess you'll just have to trust me.

Dan, have you ever expereienced stereo art? The dad of one of my friends produces it. You need to sort of look at it cross-eyed, and then amazing three-dimensional images appear. Check it out here (I'd be interested if you find it as fascinating as I do):

I am totally dizzy and afraid now. What the frinkin fucketty fuck?!! I actually cut tiny holes into a piece of paper to block out the surrounding colors so that I could verify this illusion. My mind is blown. I think I'm white, but now I know I might be black, or teal. How will I ever identify a color again without blocking out every other color nearby? whimper.

I had to peer at the centre section through my fingers, eliminating all surrounding blue before I rolled over, to check.

Holy shit.

Who woulda thunk it?
