Not that I want to seem obsessed with toe grafts and thumb replacements (let's see what those phrases do to my google ads), but Jim from Ohio emailed me a video which seems to bolster our theory that perhaps the big toe is not exactly the best choice to replace a thumb after all. Apparently middle toes can work just as well, and with less of an impact on the foot in general:

I know the thumb is important and all, but replacing it with a toe seems wrong. I'd go thumbless and just use the other hand a lot.

i worked with a dude in ohio who had a toe for a thumb. we called him "toejams." (or maybe i dreamed that part.) instead of gloves he wore flip-flops. (so wrong and not true)
