Dreaming is for pansies.

I've recently discovered that it's socially unacceptable for one man to tell another man that they had a dream about them. Apparently, it's like an unwritten rule. Even if the dream is not even remotely sexual in nature, you will still get a bad reaction.

I bumped into someone that I hadn't seen in a while, which triggered a lost memory of a dream that I had about him the very night before, coincidentally enough. My initial reaction, before considering the consequences, was to blurt out "Hey, I dreamed about you last night." His reaction was quick and unmistakable: sheer terror accompanied by a palpable uncomfortable silence. I immediately recognized that I should have kept quiet about it, but at this point it was too late. I tried to smooth over the awkwardness by explaining the dream in detail, so that he could rest assured that it was not lascivious in nature. The dream was something about paparazzi and a party in New York and he was there along with that freakish goliath Red Sonja woman from the Surreal Life 2, but I left out the part that he wasn't wearing a shirt. Just kidding. But even the description of the relatively innocent dream didn't appear to calm his nerves. It seems that the mere fact he was in my subconscious at all was disturbing enough.

But I don't understand what the big deal is. I dream about lots of people, every night, usually doing stupid things that make no logical sense. I assume that everyone dreams about random people. It doesn't necessarily indicate a latent sexual attraction or even a weird fixation. Honestly, I've dreamt about Ray Liotta before, and you can't get less appealing than Ray Liotta. Plus, who does that guy think he is? Don't flatter yourself, buddy. Anyway, people are stupid. I would be more than flattered to find out I was floating around in anyone's subconscious.

You perv. There is a lady that I work with, more accurately is to say we work in the same building, had a dream that I fired her. This was disturbing to me, because apparently somewhere in her subconscious she believes that I am out to get her or sabotage her job in someway. I’m sure on some level she dislikes, she’s not really sure why, she just doesn’t like me now.

I also just found out recently that its not all that cool to tell someone that you dreamed they died, got creamed my a city bus for example.

Does this guy feel threatened by you? Does he feel you may have sexual feelings towards him? He probably is just a big homophobe which commonly means he is a latent homsexual himself. Maybe he feels threatened because HE has a crush on YOU! Hmmm.

Yeah, maybe you should have lied and told him he died in your dream? I'm sure that would have gotten rid of any sexual tension.

I have a very active subconscious-anything can set it off and manifest in my dreams. Thanks to your blog I had a dream about the fiji mermaid last night...

I recently dreamt about having "relations" with a 16 year old boy. The next day I was at a show with a friend when I loudly proclaimed, just as the band finished a song and a general hush fell over the crowd, "I dreamt I was a pedophile last night!"

Don't let it get you down Dan. They say that the other people in a dream are some manifestaion of how you view yourself or of something you admire or fear or just a quality about yourself represented in them. I don't know how the sexual aspect fits in there though ;)

I must be socially slow....I tell people I have sexual dreams about them all the time.Sometimes even if I had never had an attraction to them, the sexual dream kind of makes me want them for a day or two.That could be their fear...that the dream has made you hot for them.

I love this thread. Without generalizing TOO much, I think it's a male/female thing too...my best friend (female) always gets pissed at me if she DOESN'T show up in my dreams. I mean, I could be having a dream about cleaning my house and she's all, "...so what was I doing?"
