The Missing Piece

I saw this brilliantly tragic image in an online forum the other day:

Awwwww! :(

I apologize that I don't know the source of the image or its creator, but it made me realize what an apt metaphor the missing puzzle piece can be. Even if you simplify the concept, it can be quite effective. So I made my own missing-puzzle-piece gallery:

That last one was too obvious wasn't it? Damn, why do I always have to go for the cheap and easy!? Shame on me!

very nice...I may have just added Paris Hilton with the same missing piece as "dubbya"

By Blogger Trudy, at 2:30 PM

Dan, I love ya. You're so cool. :)

By Blogger Silver Frog, at 6:06 PM

More from Dan's genius mind!

By Blogger CampBlood, at 8:33 AM

Haha, you are a master photoshopper. Where did Cruise leave his Wii?

By Anonymous Richard, at 9:13 AM

I think Cruise has a Wii, I just don't think he's ever put it in Katie's Xbox. AHAHAHAHAHAHA! Xbox I says. Classic.

Seriously, very well done. I'd love to know how you did the puzzle overlay, these are extraordinarily effective visual metaphors.

By Blogger Wender J. Crinklebank, at 6:41 PM

Classic! Loved it.

By Anonymous mike, at 8:23 PM

I feel like they are all too obvious. The difference between the pictures you photoshopped and the original is that you photoshopped all things that are already there to be not there. The picture with the girl and the missing cat shows the girl depressed because there is no cat and said absence is the cause of her sadness. The pictures you've photoshopped are just an attempt to be clever at the expense of famous people and cliches that everyone else has already heard.

This would have worked better if you had shaped the missing pieces like a heart or a nose or a penis or a brain. It might be hitting you over the head but with the subject matter you've chosen, the style would have been much more suitable and more impressive really.

By Blogger Hugo Hunx, at 8:52 PM

I posted your images on my portfolio, there's any problem?

I gave you a credits ok?

By Anonymous Fe. Køs, at 10:47 PM

The reason he didnt make shapes is because he's using the alien skin xenofex filter I too use it and find them VERY handy and well rendered :)

By Anonymous ORI0N, at 12:30 AM

I too think there's a big difference between the first puzzle of the girl and the rest. If the missing puzzle piece isn't in the shape of what's missing, it's just a strategically placed missing piece. He could have used the filter and then taken the time to shape the missing pieces and they would have been far funnier.

The one of the girl is great, though. Kudos to the person that did that one.

By Anonymous Hammer, at 1:40 PM

Great Job

By Blogger Mohammed Raei, at 1:44 PM

Obviously the cat joke is better and more complicated than any of mine. Like I said, I like to go for the cheap and easy jokes.

The reason I didn't change the shape of the pieces is because I'm not telling the same joke as the person who created the girl and the missing cat image. The picture of the girl requires that the missing piece be shaped like a cat, otherwise there would be no joke. The images I chose can just use the strategically placed missing piece to make the joke, because you can easily understand just by their placement what is implied to be missing. If I made the pieces into the shapes of the missing elements, then that would be redundant.

Plus, I don't have all the time in the world to be photoshopping puzzle pieces. And FWIW, I did not use "Xenofex" or any other filter to create those images.

By Blogger dan, at 3:59 PM

lol very nice

By Anonymous Hip Hop, at 5:06 PM

I agree with Hugo Hunx. I would go further than Hugo to say that you are an unoriginal boring cunt.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:01 PM

Could you have left out the piece that has Bush's mouth instead?

The man has a brain, but his speaking abilities will become legendary.

By Anonymous Dark-Star, at 7:07 PM

hahaha surely if you *need* to have the puzzle peices heart shaped or brain shaped then you are too stupid for a joke like this? haha SYMBOLISM guys!! does everything have to be spelled out? =P Nice work Dan =)

By Anonymous Carrie, at 7:11 PM

well done, brother

By Blogger FF1959, at 7:43 PM

Hey.. that's great!

My GF just had her dog put to sleep so the first one really hit home!

By Anonymous dav1d, at 9:39 PM

Very nice. There are millions of possibilities for these kinda things.

By Anonymous Mike Kupfer, at 11:59 PM

Some people would gripe if you hung them with a new rope.

Thanks for sending me the link.

By Blogger Granny, at 1:07 AM

I agree with Hugo.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:16 AM

I think your work is very interesting. The original with the cat is good, but your right about having to shape the piece. I like yours better because, although simple concepts, your still left to have to infer whats missing as easy as that may be.

Plus its funny as hell. The last one is my desktop background. :-)

By Anonymous Tyler, at 10:42 AM

so that means that cheney could actually be the tin man, and bush is probably the straw man.

I think his speaking abilities are a direct result of his brain, or lack thereof.

By Blogger just me, at 11:19 AM

Ouch.. Well done. I love the missing nose.. haha

By Anonymous Bowrag, at 11:35 AM

dude i just found all the pieces dow the back of my couch

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:56 PM

Too bad that you couldn't make the piece like the shape of a heart or brain on Cheney or Bush , which neither of them possess!

By Anonymous Katman7, at 12:40 AM

Man, Now that,s a PIECE of work.

I think, it's a very nice, and funny idea...:) I like especially the first picture:)

By Anonymous frousinette, at 9:37 AM

i strongly disagree with Hugo.
wouldn't shaping the pieces have made things even more obvious?
so next time please think first, then post... :-)

By Anonymous v-kid, at 11:04 AM

to simply agree with someone else without being able to express why is much more boring than to try to be creative. and, to call them a very ugly word simply increases the perception that you prob voted for the monkey boy in the oval office.

By Anonymous jyd, at 1:52 PM

I must be woefully ignorant when it comes to the world of celebrities. I don't get the joke about Mr Cruise not having a penis? Is it to imply that he's been "pussy-whipped" (as they say)?

Someone please explain it to me, I'm very curious.. .

By Blogger Silph, at 2:09 PM

What online forum did you get the first one from?

it wouldve been smart of you to link to the forum you got these from.

oh well...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:04 PM

I created all of them except for the first one. The first one I got off a random image internet forum that had no reference. Sorry. That's all I got.

Ha!Ha!I liked it.It made me laugh soo hard. I rate that 5 star. Well done!!!!!!

By Anonymous someone, at 7:30 PM

No Nancy Pelosi? Or Harry Reid?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:05 AM

Just a BIG ol FYI. They posted this on I-Am-Bored.com, which may explain the massive comment overload.

*sigh*

By Blogger elcynic, at 6:56 PM

Why only one piece? Could they be larger or smaller? Imagine!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:36 AM

well done very apt.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:23 PM

Outstanding. That's a very clever concept. I completely agree with some of decisions but for now I'll let you decide which ones they are.

By Blogger Jay, at 10:11 AM

Dude, you compleatly missed the point.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:33 PM

that is extremely funny so true

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:30 PM

Dan...really loved the puzzle thing....x

By Anonymous cass, at 6:27 AM

President Bush graduated from Yale and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, and you say he does not have a brain? You probably could not get into Yale or Harvard, much less graduate with any GPA.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:09 AM

I really got a kick out of your pictures, I found your site on stumbleupon.com. The people that say negative things just don't have a life if all they have to do is insult others. They probably have no one in their life that will listen to them in person. Unfortunately nice people like us have to waste out time reading their crap. Grow up you idiots, if you don't like something, keep going till you find something you do like!!! It's just a click away!!! Especially you wusses who sign anonymous, Dan, had a great time in your site. Keep up the great work.

k well not to bring u down but liek some have said copying anothers work is just rong altough i do find ur work amusing i must say theirs nothing liek the original and to take something so sad an serious an try to play it off as a joke i dont find funny at all i mean like a pool lil girl losing im asuming her best friend and this poor guy/girls look on it was a way to open our eyes through how a child might veiw such a thing as a simple misplaced puzzle peice of their own life now i would understan if u simply put things like baby in crib with missing puzzle peice of mom an dad or maybe family with tornato and missing puzzle house. i also understan u not wanting to take the time to map out such things, like i dont normally take the time to post on such things. but still dont make a joke of some things that rnt all that funny. an for all those who love your work dont hate on me for making a simple point i do agree with u all finding his interpritations to be funny. an thats all i got to say sorry if it sounds harsh cuz i didnt mean for it to be. hope to hear from ya neways

By Anonymous meg, at 9:54 PM

Lovely, esp. Bush

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:48 PM

I think your totally stupid and probably don't know jack about the President of the United States or the Vice President. Easy to make stupid jokes about our commander in chief. You must be Muslim or something.... hmmm figures.

It really amuses me that people
who imply that Dubya is an idiot
are in reality the biggest morons
of all. You dopes are just mimicking
the crap spread by the media.
If you accomplished half in your life
what dubya has you would be smart enough to realize and acknowledge his true intelligence.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:49 PM

the ones about Bush and Cheney are right on

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:26 AM

Another good one would be a woman giving birth and the missing piece would be her slaughtered baby. Now that would be funny.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:34 AM

very nicely done , it sure shows the missing pieces

By Blogger manish, at 3:26 AM

powerful!!!!!!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:55 AM

Love your work here. Could you please post one of our Aussie PM John Howard, with the missing piece in the brain, head, mouth, heart and privates? LOL!
Or maybe a photo of Bush and Howard together, missing both their heads?

You might've guessed. Im an Aussie and not a fan of Howard hahahaha.

Keep up the good work!

I find it a bit sad that no one realised the fact that the girl is depressed.... but that is problably because I am a depression sufferer myself, that i picked up on that.
Apart from that, I think it's well done, and quite funny/true

By Anonymous Tammii, at 10:34 PM

Very good. I liked all of the ones you did and as for the first one, I just got that impression that there was a void in her life that was making her sad, I didn't even realize that it was the cat until reading the comments. I think it was very creative for you to utilize the missing piece to signify the missing things that many of these people should have.
My only negative comment would be about the Micheal Jackson one because that one isn't really missing figuratively or literally.

By Blogger Matt, at 8:41 AM

1) I think that these are trying to do something entirely different and not completely mimic the first picture, so everyone should stop using the first picture as a basis of comparison. Just chill and enjoy what this person has done. It's very nice.

2) To whomever talked about Bush going to college: I'm sure there are plenty of people who could get into any school they wanted if they were exceedingly rich and had a president as a father. His attendance at any college, Yale, Harvard, or otherwise is no reflection on his actual intelligence. Maybe you can prove that he's intelligent, but further establishing the fact that he has good connections is not the way to do it.

3) to Silent Majority: You own lack of intelligence seems apparent in that you don't even know how to use "your" and "you're" correctly. Also, the people making fun of Bush is just that: making fun of Bush. Which means they're not making fun of you directly, so don't take it so personal. Also, how on EARTH could you possibly complain about someone saying degrading things about Bush because "it must be easy to make fun of the commander in chief" when you immediately make a comment about how anyone who does so must be Muslim? That is the most close-minded, disgusting thing I've heard in a REALLY long time.

4) to Tammii: Who are you to say what people did and didn't realize? The girl is obviously depressed. Just because we're not discussing it here doesn't mean you're the only one who picks up on the ridiculously obvious.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 2:21 AM

Dan, I don't know you and while I truly appreciate the humor in your post, it saddens me at the same time. I'm not disagreeing with your voicing your opinion, but I'd rather hear your words. Why do you think Vice President Cheney is missing empathy? Why do you feel President Bush isn't intelligent?

I'd like to respectfully offer that in my very humble opinion, it would be far more unique to come across a blogger with disagreements about the current administration who can put pen to paper and logically make his/her case for said disagreements. I am, however, grateful you live in a country that will not have you hanged for displaying our great nation's leaders in such a way that degredates and disrespects his position. But then you've probably already heard that argument, I'm sure.

By Blogger Stacey, at 11:06 PM

At this point, it's hard to believe that there is anyone left out there who is able to blindly look past the fact that the administration lied and fabricated evidence to enter into an unprovoked and unjustified war that has killed more Americans than 9/11 and at least twenty times as many innocent Iraqi civilians - and in the meantime created a whole new generation of even more fervent anti-American terrorists. I don't think it's that far of a leap to imply that this would take an incredible lack of empathy AND intelligence.

I sound like a broken record by now, and "pen" has been put to "paper" COUNTLESS times by myself and by MILLIONS of others regarding this issue, but it seems as if there are still some people out there who cannot see past the grandstanding and posturing of the president and his inept cronies.

Yes, I'm lucky to live in a country where I have the right and the opportunity to openly mock our leaders, but this is due to no help from the current administration, who have done little except battle tirelessly to errode our civil liberties and to keep us living in fear of of the unknown or the misunderstood.

Add to this the administration's lack of respect for the environment, for not believing in basic human rights and equality for all, their endorsement of torture, their abysmal foreign relations policies that have put us out of favor with those who were once our closest allies, the doomed economy that has been burdened by unregulated corruption, the increasing jobless rate, the national dept that has climbed into the TRILLIONS, the highest tax rates in decades, the bungling clusterfuck that was Katrina, the caterting to the rich and the ignoring of the poor with ridiculously unbalanced "tax cuts", their utter lack of care for everything except their own political party's advancement of unchecked power, and I can't believe I even have to ask this one more time...

... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

PLEASE watch something other than Fox News for five minutes. In fact, turn off the news altogether and go to the library.

By Blogger dan, at 8:29 AM

What can I say, Dan, your eloquent indignation got to me tonight! I'm now going to spend the rest of my week rethinking my erroneous ways...and as soon as I find my library card (do I have one?) I'm defintely on my way. Clearly I don't have an education of which to speak and maybe the library is a good place to begin. Thanks for your respectful reply, I'm very glad I came by to check. Feel free to stop by my place anytime and say hi... you'll love my friends. :)

By Blogger Stacey, at 1:30 AM

I was only giving you what you directly asked for, which are logical reasons for my "disagreements" with the current administration.

Maybe my "go to the library" comment was a little unwarranted, but it certainly wasn't lacking eloquence, and your sarcasm is duely noted.

By Blogger dan, at 7:23 AM

Wow , well done!!
You took an original , well thought out & thought provoking picture and idea.
Then turned it into yet another childish joke at the easiest targets.
