MOVIES
I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned.

Brokeback Mountain
Rating:

Why I saw it: It got good reviews.

What I think about it: When the incessant media coverage and the previews for a movie give away the entire outline of the plot, including some pretty important details, you usually wouldn't expect to get much out of actually seeing the full show, but Brokeback Mountain proved me wrong. It's an incredibly well-made and thoughtful movie that never had a problem keeping my attention. Ang Lee has made some of my most favorite movies (The Ice Storm) and some of my least favorite (The Hulk), but I think Brokeback Mountain is definitely and inarguably one of his best. He somehow even magages to make sheep-herding seem poetic. The plotting is of course frustrating (which is entirely the point) and Jake Gyllenhaal's Texan cowboy occasionally borders on caricature which can make the movie difficult to watch at times, but Heath Ledger's performance is unbelievably sincere, and the ending is heartbreaking. When all is said and done, it's almost too sad to handle, but I would never discourage anyone from seeing it. Gay cowboys rule.
