MOVIES I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned. Wednesday, September 27, 2006 :::
Why I saw it: I love Amy Sedaris and the original TV series. What I think about it: The movie is exactly like the TV show only it's a half hour longer and they can say "pussy". Saying much more about it is pointless. If you like the show, you'll like the movie. If you don't, you won't. If you've never seen the show and are wondering if you should see the movie, my answer would be "sure, give it a shot." The humor is sophisticatedly lowbrow. Oxymorons rule! Why I saw it: Word of mouth. What I think about it: It's hard not to enjoy any movie that mocks those Living Dolls pageants where 8 year old girls dress up like sluts in pancake makeup. And Little Miss Sunshine is very enjoyable indeed. It's also a wee bit forced and seems manufactured to appear unique and eccentric. The dysfunctional family scenario is played out, to say the least, but there are many nice touches here, including Greg Kinnear's failed motivational speaker character and of course the rousing climax that everyone will be talking about. On the other hand, the character's are all pretty shallow when all is said and done, the full potential of Steve Carrell is kind of wasted (in a character that never stretches beyond the surface description of "suicidal gay"), and the feel-good family dance-athon at the end is almost too pefect and sweet... a tummy-ache, eyes-crossed, too-much-sugar kind of sweet. But oh well, for two mindless enjoyable hours you can get some good laughs and the little girl in the lead role is super duper cute. Learn more about it. ::: posted by dan at 7:04 PM :: # |
